| So, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 isn't even out yet, and it's already generating tons of controversy over leaked information regarding its opening sequence. I certainly can't say that the industry I work in isn't exciting.
I can understand why there's going to be a lot of controversy over this one, though. It's actually pretty disturbing, but to prevent anyone reading who wanted to play Modern Warfare 2 from being spoiled, gonna put it under a cut from here on out. If you like gaming/storytelling in games/controversy, I'd really welcome your input, though. I'm curious to see what everyone else thinks.

I see what they're trying to do here, and I'm going to defend them against the "You've gone too far!" crowd because I think that games SHOULD be given a chance to become a serious narrative medium. I'm officially a North Carolinian now. It felt weird to turn in my NJ license, honestly.

| So, ![[info]](http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif) returner came down to visit me in Durham last Saturday, stayed through Wednesday morning. It was really, really awesome~.
Highlights include going to this arcade-y place that... okay well it wasn't as fun as it could have been (and was when I'd been before) because it was Monday and raining and NOBODY was there other than us, and due to the rain we couldn't do the Go-Karts or the Minigolf. But we found out that I suck at the Deal or No Deal arcade game, we did some House of the Dead (fuck your story let's just get to the zombie killing), and then we did Lazer Tag. Just the two of us. I thought it was actually pretty fun, being all Solid-Snake-Stealthy and... y'know. But it would have been better with more people.
The absolute best part* though was when we went to Kanki's, this Hibachi steakhouse. She'd never been to a Hibachi-style place before, and I aimed to remedy that gross injustice right away. So, the guy's doing his thing, cooking on the table, and then he makes a big flaming tower of stacked onions. And Gaby backs away from the (pretty damn big) fire, and so the chef is all "Oh, are you scared of the fire?" He grabs one of the yellow bottles that contain the oil, and says "You want some fire on you?" He then proceeds to squeeze the bottle, tossing this black stream at her.
We both kind of flinch and shy away, and then... it turns out that it was just string in the bottle, not oil at all. In retrospect, it was pretty damn hilarious. Even she thinks so. ... even if she doesn't admit it. Right?
Now it's Thanksgiving! Or it was, and it was up at New Hampshire. Saw lots of the big extended family, now back home in Jersey. Fly back to Raleigh-Durham tomorrow, and then gonna get some well-deserved sleep. | | comments: 26 comments or Leave a comment |
| Just a reminder:
Everyone needs to go buy Yokaiden if you haven't already, because it is by the wonderful kopiispace and she deserves it. The art is beautiful, and I'm really looking forward to where the story is going to go next. If anything deserves to become a breakout hit, this is it~.
Iceland was really fun, and I have gifts and stuff for lots o' peeps (mainly postcards >_>) that I have not yet sent out because I am a slacker.
Other stuff? Well, I'm technically a full-time employee of The Escapist now, though the plans for WarCry (our other site that I'd been working on full-time) are... murky. Kinda came out of nowhere, and I'm unsure about what we're going to be doing with the WC staff and content or how the phasing will work... but in the end, I'm glad for it, because I'll get to be playing all sorts of games instead of just MMO after MMO. XD;
Tomorrow night I'm actually going to be a panelist on a Media Relations roundtable about the videogame industry. Everyone else's bio mentions how long they've been doing this for and how experienced they are. I feel, uh, kind of unqualified by comparison, and will just be concentrating on not looking like a complete moron. Silence is golden.
Gaby comes down Saturday, and I am v. v. excited. Have not seen her since the end of August, and for all the total connectivity of the Internet era makes handling long-distance relationships easier than ever, there's.. really no substitute for in-person interaction. I'm really really happy, and much fun times will be had. Laser tag and go-karts, anyone?
...yes, we're also going to see Twilight.

So, last day of EVE Fanfest was today. It was really odd, and I wasn't all that comfortable covering it because I don't play the game - I felt a lot more at east at Blizzcon, for example. Still, got four pieces done, so hopefully bosses will be fine with that :P
Iceland is cold! I should have brought a hat/gloves - but I didn't. Luckily, the Icelandics were thoughtful enough to have stores where you can buy these things.
Tomorrow the press gets to go on a scenic tour or something. Should be fun. And then I spend *all day* flying back on Monday the 10th.
It was strange to fly out of JFK on Tuesday right as the first polls were closing, and then by the time we landed in Reykjavik the election had been called. But there weren't any TVs or newspapers in the airport so we didn't find out who had won for like an hour and a half until we asked someone at the convenience store XD
It's kind of cool not to feel awkward about saying you're an American. Hell, I've had like five random people in bars / whatever (the Icelandics party hard) just strike up conversations about the election. They like Obama over here.
Still no luck tracking down a Wrath of the Lich King collector's box :( I want the pet.
